Cupertino

City of Cupertino

Cupertino is now known internationally as the home of Apple Inc. However, in its early years, it was a rural village, known for its plentiful orchards like the surrounding towns. Cupertino’s orchards produced cherries, plums, and apricots.

The first mention of Cupertino as a reference to the area is said to have been from a Franciscan priest who named what is now Stevens Creek “Arroyo de San Jose Cupertino,” when Spaniards were still in the area doing missionary work. Then, in the late 1800s, the name Cupertino was thrown around as the name of a wine company, then to name the post office, and eventually found its way around the town.

The Crossroads District retail center in Cupertino now stands where the very first post office, blacksmith, and general store were opened and run. Over a century later, after postwar expansion and growth, Cupertino was incorporated by Santa Clara County as a city in late 1955. A few years later, the Vallco Park and Vallco Fashion Park were built; a few buildings in the Vallco Park were sold to HP, thus marking Cupertino’s progress towards becoming a part of the Silicon Valley. Subsequently, in the 1960s, De Anza College was founded.

Today, Cupertino ranks high in education, safety, marriage, and income.
